The Kuba are a cluster of tribes, each representing a different historic subgroup. They include the Bushong, the Ngeede, the Kel Pyaang, the Bulaang, the Bieeng, the Ilebo, the Idiing, the Kaam, the Ngoombe Kayuweeng, the Showa, the Bokila, the Maluk, and Ngongo. The Bushong are the ruling group, and the king of the Kuba Nyim must be a Bushong. The clans are made of shallow matrilineal lineages with virilocal settlement patterns. Each subgroup has a permanent representative at the court of the Bushong king . Marriage is monogamous except for chiefs. Inheritance is limited to portable objects, and land rights belong to the village, clan, or individuals.
