The Boyo, along with other tribes were pushed northward by the Luba during their northward migrations. They crossed the Lukuga and settled in the Luama basin. Some Boyo continued even further north to Maniema
The Boyo represent the northernmost element of the Luba group.
They were led by Kabumba Mogabo and Kayumba Kabembe , who allied himself with the Kunda, but descended when Kongolo established the first Luba empire. The Boyo population was decimated by Arab slavers, and by arabizised Batetela mercenaries.. The 1930 Bembe expansion and the sleeping sickness contributed to their further decline.
