The Dan place a high value on the individual’s ability to succeed and consider a demonstrations of wealth and beautiful wives as proof of achievements.
Carved female sculptures are called LU ME. They are portraits of living women, usually portraits of a favorite wife. These sculptures are rarely seen in public. They are status objects, and usually kept in the privacy of the home, and only shown to important visitors. They are not images of ancestors.
The sculptures with long tresses framing the face, and often artful scarification on the body are particular to the Dan, living on the border of Liberia and Guinea.
